Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls fame is set to play the Canberra Theatre Centre on Saturday March the 4th. You might remember The Dresden Dolls – they are a duo of Drums and Piano, featuring rich melodic almost punk-esque songs, centring on Amanda’s powerful voice. She is also known for her work in the duo Evelyn Evelyn.

The Show

Palmer is returning with a solo performance, featuring piano and ukulele. She is taking it back to basics with a stripped-down approach this tour. Her shows are known to have a burlesque or cabaret feel. Some call her the “Queen of Punk Cabaret”.

She will be playing Dresden Dolls classics, fan favourites, and all-new material. The tour is following a mixed period in her life, having given birth to her son, tragically lost close friends, achieved a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, and released her memoir “The Art of Asking”.

History

She was born in New York, and grew up in Lexington Massachusetts. Before starting The Dresden Dolls, she busked for a living as a statue called “The Eight Foot Bride”.

Palmer met Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione at a Halloween party in the year 2000. She integrated drama into their shows by inviting Lexington High School students to perform acts while they played. This eventually became The Dirty Business Brigade which was a troupe of a mixture of experienced and novice actors who performed at many Dresden Dolls shows.

After gaining some cult popularity by 2002, they recorded their self-titled album, and were subsequently picked up by Roadrunner Records.

Palmer wrote a musical called The Onion Cellar, based on a short story from The Tin Drum by Günter Grass. The Dresden Dolls performed the show alongside The American Repertory Theater in 2006 and 2007. Palmer has been a prolific artist for many years now and it would pay off to see her performing her music live in concert. Tickets from Canberra Theatre Centre. Don’t miss it!
