Common Mistakes People Make With Keys and Locks

keys on bench with coffeeThere are many ways to lock yourself out, and it is almost always accidental. Luckily, locksmiths like Out and About Locksmith Canberra are here to help you in your time of need! We decided to outline the most common mistakes that people make with their keys, be it house, work or car keys.

Car keys

  • Not keeping your spare key on you. Unfortunately, if you lock yourself out of your car, having the spare key at another location not easily accessible makes things a bit harder. Or leaving it in the glove box.
  • Not having a spare key at all. This is a big one. It is definitely worth having a spare key made if you only have one key. This applies to house and business keys as well.
  • Putting your keys down somewhere in your car. Some cars have an auto lock feature or a boot lock only feature. It is very common that you unlock your boot, put your keys down, load the car and then slam the boot shut. Thus, locking your keys inside the car.
  • Not getting remote locking looked at when it first starts playing up. It is always best to get this fixed at the first sign of the battery failing. If you keep putting it off, you’ll be up for a new battery and the locksmith’s services as well.

House/Business Keys

  • Giving keys to children to play with and lose as a result. There has been many times where a small child was given keys as a distraction because of their lovely jingly sound. Said child has gone off and left them somewhere, and is either unable or unwilling to tell the parent or caregiver where they have put them!
  • Another cause involving children is them trying to “unlock” things that shouldn’t and end up getting the key stuck or broken.
  • Not getting “sticky” locks looked at. You don’t want to leave getting this fixed. It will avoid the distress of a child or animal being locked inside a room. Getting them out will require time and probably noise.
  • Not changing locks when you purchase a new property. It is vital to do this, otherwise your safety might be compromised. Who knows how many other keys exist that can unlock your house?

Hopefully this has given you an insight in how to minimise the probability of requiring emergency services of a locksmith. Don’t forget though, Out and About Locksmiths Canberra are here 24/7 if this should ever happen to you.

Don’t Get Locked Out Again

Have you ever been locked out of your own home? It can be embarrassing, and even dangerous. This can be a stressful and inconvenient situation, and it takes time and hassle to get back inside. Here at Out and About Locksmiths, we’ve put together some precautions you should take to avoid this.

Keep Track of Your Keys

This is a straightforward point. Use a system to keep your keys in the same place all the time, for example a key hook by the door.

Develop a Checking Habit

To ensure you never forget important items when leaving the house, make a mental note every time. For example: “I’ve got my wallet, keys and phone”. You will find this greatly reduces the chances of locking yourself out. You can even say this out loud if it helps reduce your anxiety about forgetting.

Hold Your Keys in Your Hand

If you’ve forgotten something inside the house and return to grab it, keep the keys in your hand – don’t put them down on a table or you might forget to pick them back up before you leave again.

Back Up Your Keys

Pre-emptively distribute spare keys amongst friends, neighbours, and family whom you trust. This makes getting back inside a breeze. You can just make a call or take a short walk and you’re back inside. You can also keep a spare key at work or in your car.

Digital Locks

An alternative to keys is digital locks. They are secure, convenient, and easy for a qualified locksmith to install. They can be programmed with different entry codes.

Spare Key Safe

Never just hide a spare key outside your house. This makes it far too easy for intruders to get in. A good option is a wall-mounted safe. These tough, coded containers are a safe backup option.

Although being locked out can be an emergency and we’ve all done it, following some of these pointers should drastically reduce or eliminate the likelihood of it happening again. Make sure you put our number in your phone – 0431 515 640. This way you will always have someone to turn to just in case.

Car Keys – Being Prepared

Will You Lose Your Car Keys?

We all tell ourselves that we will never lose our car keys – or lock them inside our car. You might have a great system of reminders in place, but unfortunately, sometimes the unthinkable happens. A distraction at the wrong moment might be all it takes – or sometimes, you don’t even know how something goes missing, it just does. It might not even be you that loses the keys or locks them in the car – it could be a family member or a friend. Sometimes these things are out of our control. The question is – will you be prepared for the worst?
If you lose your car keys or lock them in your car, it could cause all kinds of upsets in your life. For example: Getting to work late, getting stranded, missing important appointments, leaving other people stranded, or having important items stuck in the car.
What if you lose your car keys or lock them in your car on a bad day when you’ve just spent all your money on bills, and you can’t afford a locksmith? You’d be facing a huge problem. No one can afford being without their car.

What is the solution?

To avoid all the aforementioned problems, you should get a backup car key made. Did you know that Out and About Locksmiths can copy transponder keys (transponder keys are special car keys made for most post 1995 cars that switch off an engine immobiliser)? We can also code new car remotes, so don’t worry, that one key doesn’t have to be the only one. Having a spare key in your wallet, bag, or hidden under the car would make all the difference. If you take action and contact us today, you could save yourself from a world of grief tomorrow.

Locked out?

How to get into your Home

Credit Card Lock Pick

When you are locked out here’s a method you can try. To do this method, you are obviously going to need a credit card. Try to choose a card that you don’t mind if it breaks such as an expired gift card. First of all, what you want to do is insert the chosen card between the door frame and the door where the latch is, Then hold the card perpendicular to the door and begin to wiggle the card side to side. While your pushing, start to bend the card the opposite way from the doorknob, this will slide the latch away from the door jam. If you do end up unlocking the door, call Out and About Locksmiths. You have just shown how easy it is to get into your home.

Remove the Door Knob

Most door knobs have the mounting screws hidden, but if you take a look closer at the door knob you will be able to see a small hole. Using a thin piece of metal or even a pin, insert the pin into the hole and start applying pressure. Keep pushing the pin and while your doing that start to twisting the door knob with your other hand until the door knob is removed.

Call a Locksmith

When all else fails, it may be time to throw in the towel and call a local locksmith. Out and About Locksmiths are perfect for getting into your locked home, call them on 0431 515 640.
