Safety Warning – Kids, Animals and Cars

Safety Warning – Kids, Animals and Cars

dog looking out car window During the summer, we all like to get out and about and enjoy the nice weather. Enjoying it with our families and pets is even better. For whatever reason though, a growing number of incidents are occurring with dogs and children being left unattended in cars. Quite often, particularly with animals, the end result is devastating.

Out and About Locksmiths would like to stress the importance of never leaving your pets unattended in a locked vehicle. The temperature can soar inside cars at an alarming rate, way past the actual outdoor temperature.

Never give your young children your car keys to play with, on the off-chance they manage to get themselves into the car and be unable to get themselves out. Leaving children to sleep in a car while you do other things is also a recipe for disaster. It really is a risk you do not want to take with their lives.

This safety reminder is brought to you by Out and About Locksmiths Canberra, your professional local locksmiths.

What is a locksmith?

A locksmith is a professional who works with locks on almost everything, from locks on doors to windows to safes. They can even provide a complete  security solution for your home or business. A locksmith works with almost every type of lock there is. Like most trades, a Locksmith must complete a training course and an apprenticeship. Then they are able to repair, adjust and install all types of locks from ones in your house, your car and even office buildings.

Out and About Locksmiths are motivated,  experienced, certified and licensed locksmiths. We operate 24 hours a day in a professional and friendly manner to all our clients. We come out to you if you are stranded no matter the time of day, and quickly too. Is your key stuck in the lock? We are able to extract your key and create another for you. Yes, that means a new key!

Don’t hesitate to contact us any time for whatever lock and key needs you might have.

Common Mistakes People Make With Keys and Locks

Common Mistakes People Make With Keys and Locks

keys on bench with coffeeThere are many ways to lock yourself out, and it is almost always accidental. Luckily, locksmiths like Out and About Locksmith Canberra are here to help you in your time of need! We decided to outline the most common mistakes that people make with their keys, be it house, work or car keys.

Car keys

  • Not keeping your spare key on you. Unfortunately, if you lock yourself out of your car, having the spare key at another location not easily accessible makes things a bit harder. Or leaving it in the glove box.
  • Not having a spare key at all. This is a big one. It is definitely worth having a spare key made if you only have one key. This applies to house and business keys as well.
  • Putting your keys down somewhere in your car. Some cars have an auto lock feature or a boot lock only feature. It is very common that you unlock your boot, put your keys down, load the car and then slam the boot shut. Thus, locking your keys inside the car.
  • Not getting remote locking looked at when it first starts playing up. It is always best to get this fixed at the first sign of the battery failing. If you keep putting it off, you’ll be up for a new battery and the locksmith’s services as well.

House/Business Keys

  • Giving keys to children to play with and lose as a result. There has been many times where a small child was given keys as a distraction because of their lovely jingly sound. Said child has gone off and left them somewhere, and is either unable or unwilling to tell the parent or caregiver where they have put them!
  • Another cause involving children is them trying to “unlock” things that shouldn’t and end up getting the key stuck or broken.
  • Not getting “sticky” locks looked at. You don’t want to leave getting this fixed. It will avoid the distress of a child or animal being locked inside a room. Getting them out will require time and probably noise.
  • Not changing locks when you purchase a new property. It is vital to do this, otherwise your safety might be compromised. Who knows how many other keys exist that can unlock your house?

Hopefully this has given you an insight in how to minimise the probability of requiring emergency services of a locksmith. Don’t forget though, Out and About Locksmiths Canberra are here 24/7 if this should ever happen to you.

How Does A Lock Work?

How Does A Lock Work?

pin tumbler lock actionHave you ever wondered how a lock works? Or why a key has to be cut a certain way to unlock it? The most common type of lock is called a pin tumbler, and requires a key cut to its particular pattern of pins in order to open it.

To demonstrate, we found an infographic that shows how this particular type of lock works.

Remember, if you’re ever in a jam with this type of lock, or any other type; the team at Out And About Locksmiths Canberra will be there ASAP to help you out! Contact us here if you have any questions about the services we offer!

The only thing stopping a criminal getting into your home is your locks!

With so many options available, how do you decide which lock will best suits your needs?

Out and About Locksmiths are here to show you what to look for, and how to choose the right one for your home.

Types of door locks

There are two main types of locks on the market.

  • Deadbolts : your main security feature and the preferred lock when it comes to securing your home
  • Knobs/ Levers : usually used more for secondary security and internal doors

What to look for?

There are a few reasons you would consider purchasing new door locks. For example, during upgrading your home, new home construction or renovation, or after a break-in. Many people consider style before function but this isn’t always the best way. Your lock is only as good as its quality. Quality, safety and function come first.

What Room Needs a Lock?

Depending on which rooms require locks, there are three main functional categories: 1) entry 2) privacy 3) passage.

Defining the main function is the first step in choosing a lock. Function and quality will help determine the level of security and endurance your lock will need to uphold. For instance, a hallway or interior door usually doesn’t require as strong a level of security as your front door. If it’s a high traffic area like the bathroom, you’ll want your lock to hold up longer. Therefore a higher grade of lock is more appropriate.

Quality & Consistency

When you buy a certain type of lock for your home please choose the same lock throughout, with the exception of the exterior lock. Cheapest is not always best, either!

Helpful Tips for choosing the right door lock

  1. Always look at the quality not style.
  2. Whichever lock you get, be sure to look for the UL on the packaging.
  3. When you’re securing your home, make sure you’re using a Grade 1 deadbolt to maximise home security.
  4.  If you still aren’t sure what you need, you can call Out and About Locksmith Canberra to secure your home.

Window Locks – just like doors, windows can also have keyed locks on them for added security.

Car Locks – locksmiths can get you into your car if you leave the keys in, but also repair the lock, reprogram remote control keys, change flat batteries or just cut another key.

Security Safes – some locksmiths are able to install and repair locks and cut keys for security safes.
