How Do Transponder Car Keys Work?

How Do Transponder Car Keys Work?

lock in car

A transponder key is a car key with an inbuilt chip that is needed to deactivate an engine immobiliser. Most cars post-1995 have these immobilisers.

The engine control unit (ECU) of the car sends an electronic message to the key when the ignition is turned to on or run. The car will only start if it receives the correct message back from the key.

Transponder is the words “transmitter” and “responder” combined. The word emerged at around 1945. A transponder is a small electronic chip that has a “non-volatile memory” which doesn’t need constant electricity for data retention. A transponder also features a set of windings, or coil, which is made of fine wire wrapped around a tube. This is similar to the windings in an electric motor.

There are two kinds of transponders – electric coupled systems, and magnetic coupled systems. Electric coupled systems can transmit data anywhere from a few inches to many miles, such as those used in aeroplanes and satellites. They require significant amounts of constant energy to function. Magnetic coupled systems, in contrast, are passive – they do not need constant energy or a power source. They transmit and receive data on the 125kHz bandwidth. Because they are un-powered, they have a limited transmission range – anywhere from 1 to 15 centimetres. This radio transmission can penetrate certain materials such as the plastic surrounding the chip built into a car key.

How it Works

Most car transponder chips have a similar process for key identification. There is an induction coil mounted around the ignition lock. This generates an electromagnetic field when a key is inserted into the ignition and turned. The windings in the key absorb that energy and use it to power the transponder chip which then emits the code signal to the ECU. The signal is most often an alphanumeric code. This process allows the electronic components in the car to function which in turn allows the engine to start or continue running.

Transponder keys can be cut and programmed using our special equipment here at Out and About Locksmiths.

What To Look For When Choosing A Locksmith

What To Look For When Choosing A Locksmith

locksmith CanberraIf you’ve ever needed to find a trades person to do a job, you’ll know how overwhelming it can be. Who do you choose? Is their price reasonable? Will they rip you off? Is their work guaranteed? While we can’t speak for other trades, Out and About Locksmith Canberra will give you the inside scoop on what to look for when choosing a locksmith for your security needs. It might be a bit of a job in the beginning, but when it is your family’s safety on the line, being thorough is a must.

  1. Ask for proof of certification! A reputable locksmith will be a member of the Locksmiths Guild of Australia and Security Construction Equipment Committee (SCEC) approval.
  2. Personal recommendations. Ask family and friends if they know and can personally recommend someone. Word of mouth is the best advertising for services, either good or bad.
  3. Ask for itemised quotes for the work you need done, and get more than one quote.
  4. Check for proof of insurance and guarantee of work
  5. When enquiring, check their professionalism over the phone. Do they use a business name when answering the phone, do they take the time to listen to what you require and are they happy to provide an itemised quote.
  6. Check if the person you are talking to is the person who will come and complete the job.

We hope these few tips give you an idea what to look for when requiring the services of a locksmith. Out and About Locksmith Canberra fulfil all these criteria, you can check out our services and certification here. Safety Warning – Kids, Animals and Cars

Safety Warning – Kids, Animals and Cars

dog looking out car window During the summer, we all like to get out and about and enjoy the nice weather. Enjoying it with our families and pets is even better. For whatever reason though, a growing number of incidents are occurring with dogs and children being left unattended in cars. Quite often, particularly with animals, the end result is devastating.

Out and About Locksmiths would like to stress the importance of never leaving your pets unattended in a locked vehicle. The temperature can soar inside cars at an alarming rate, way past the actual outdoor temperature.

Never give your young children your car keys to play with, on the off-chance they manage to get themselves into the car and be unable to get themselves out. Leaving children to sleep in a car while you do other things is also a recipe for disaster. It really is a risk you do not want to take with their lives.

This safety reminder is brought to you by Out and About Locksmiths Canberra, your professional local locksmiths.

Common Mistakes People Make With Keys and Locks

Common Mistakes People Make With Keys and Locks

keys on bench with coffeeThere are many ways to lock yourself out, and it is almost always accidental. Luckily, locksmiths like Out and About Locksmith Canberra are here to help you in your time of need! We decided to outline the most common mistakes that people make with their keys, be it house, work or car keys.

Car keys

  • Not keeping your spare key on you. Unfortunately, if you lock yourself out of your car, having the spare key at another location not easily accessible makes things a bit harder. Or leaving it in the glove box.
  • Not having a spare key at all. This is a big one. It is definitely worth having a spare key made if you only have one key. This applies to house and business keys as well.
  • Putting your keys down somewhere in your car. Some cars have an auto lock feature or a boot lock only feature. It is very common that you unlock your boot, put your keys down, load the car and then slam the boot shut. Thus, locking your keys inside the car.
  • Not getting remote locking looked at when it first starts playing up. It is always best to get this fixed at the first sign of the battery failing. If you keep putting it off, you’ll be up for a new battery and the locksmith’s services as well.

House/Business Keys

  • Giving keys to children to play with and lose as a result. There has been many times where a small child was given keys as a distraction because of their lovely jingly sound. Said child has gone off and left them somewhere, and is either unable or unwilling to tell the parent or caregiver where they have put them!
  • Another cause involving children is them trying to “unlock” things that shouldn’t and end up getting the key stuck or broken.
  • Not getting “sticky” locks looked at. You don’t want to leave getting this fixed. It will avoid the distress of a child or animal being locked inside a room. Getting them out will require time and probably noise.
  • Not changing locks when you purchase a new property. It is vital to do this, otherwise your safety might be compromised. Who knows how many other keys exist that can unlock your house?

Hopefully this has given you an insight in how to minimise the probability of requiring emergency services of a locksmith. Don’t forget though, Out and About Locksmiths Canberra are here 24/7 if this should ever happen to you.

The only thing stopping a criminal getting into your home is your locks!

With so many options available, how do you decide which lock will best suits your needs?

Out and About Locksmiths are here to show you what to look for, and how to choose the right one for your home.

Types of door locks

There are two main types of locks on the market.

  • Deadbolts : your main security feature and the preferred lock when it comes to securing your home
  • Knobs/ Levers : usually used more for secondary security and internal doors

What to look for?

There are a few reasons you would consider purchasing new door locks. For example, during upgrading your home, new home construction or renovation, or after a break-in. Many people consider style before function but this isn’t always the best way. Your lock is only as good as its quality. Quality, safety and function come first.

What Room Needs a Lock?

Depending on which rooms require locks, there are three main functional categories: 1) entry 2) privacy 3) passage.

Defining the main function is the first step in choosing a lock. Function and quality will help determine the level of security and endurance your lock will need to uphold. For instance, a hallway or interior door usually doesn’t require as strong a level of security as your front door. If it’s a high traffic area like the bathroom, you’ll want your lock to hold up longer. Therefore a higher grade of lock is more appropriate.

Quality & Consistency

When you buy a certain type of lock for your home please choose the same lock throughout, with the exception of the exterior lock. Cheapest is not always best, either!

Helpful Tips for choosing the right door lock

  1. Always look at the quality not style.
  2. Whichever lock you get, be sure to look for the UL on the packaging.
  3. When you’re securing your home, make sure you’re using a Grade 1 deadbolt to maximise home security.
  4.  If you still aren’t sure what you need, you can call Out and About Locksmith Canberra to secure your home.
